CNN is way too easy to troll…
At this point, there are a myriad of alleged symbols, phrases, and presumably magic spells used by white supremacist interlopers on the internet. These include pretty radical things like the “OK” hand signal, drinking milk, and now the “fashtag” — which is just the hash symbol used by just about everyone with a Twitter account.
Many of these symbols were actually invented as a joke by users of online forums like 4Chan — specifically for the purpose of getting CNN and other mainstream media outlets to report on them. Well, they can tally up another win this week, because CNN reporters are now warning their viewers that dropping a simple “#” into a conversation can indicate sympathies for neo-Nazi movements.
What an incredible time to be alive…
Now, let’s be very honest for a second — far-right white nationalist groups do use dog whistles to connect with one another on the internet. These include the so-called “14 words”, and a few other “inside jokes” popularized by fringe political groups. But — the “fashtag” isn’t one of them. Neither is drinking milk.
Once again, CNN shows us how easy it is for the mainstream media to be manipulated into a frenzy.
