Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is often portrayed as being some sort of moral compass for the political left. After all, the self-described “democratic socialist” was universally praised in the media after he denounced an alleged supporter of his in the wake of a mass shooting targeting Republican lawmakers.
But make no mistake — Sanders is just as much of a political opportunist as any of his Democratic colleagues. This tweet is a perfect example.
By already throwing the climate change agenda into the mix, Sanders and others like him are effectively blaming conservatives and the Republican Party for an arbitrary act of nature. There is exactly zero evidence that Hurricane Harvey had anything to do with a radical change in climate over a short-term period.
In fact, Hurricane Harvey follows years of mysterious inactivity on the Atlantic. Even in places like Florida, a state which faces the highest risk of hurricane activity in the country, America has been in a bit of a dry spell.
