In 2022, Amazon selected Tymond Tran as one of ten teachers in the entire country to receive its Future Engineer Teacher of the Year award. He got a $5,000 personal prize. His school — Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Lynn, Massachusetts — got a $25,000 grant. The award specifically celebrated educators who promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in their classrooms.
On July 22, 2026, Tran stood in Essex County Superior Court in Salem and pleaded not guilty to aggravated rape of a child.
The grand jury indictment, handed down July 15, charges Tran with four counts: aggravated rape of a child with a ten-year age difference, indecent assault and battery on a person fourteen or older, posing or exhibiting a child in a nude or lascivious pose, and distributing obscene matter to a minor. The victim was a fourteen-year-old student in Tran's eighth-grade class. Prosecutors say the crimes occurred during the 2022-2023 school year — the same period Tran was collecting his diversity award.
Tran taught at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Lynn from 2021 to 2024. He left the district before achieving professional teacher status — on his own, according to Lynn officials — and landed at Lowell Community Charter Public School, about an hour north. That school terminated his employment in July 2026 after learning of the charges.
Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson and Superintendent Molly Cohen released a joint statement saying they were "shocked and disturbed by this news." The man Amazon held up as a national model for inclusive education was allegedly raping one of his students while the trophy was still warm, and the people in charge of the building are shocked.
The bail conditions tell you everything the charges don't. Tran must wear a GPS monitoring device. He's under twenty-four-hour house arrest at an address in Attleboro, allowed to leave only for medical appointments. He's prohibited from unsupervised contact with anyone under eighteen, including victims and witnesses. He must consent to random device searches and cannot possess child sexual abuse material. His next court date is August 26.
Amazon's Future Engineer program hands out these awards to teachers who, in the company's framing, create "inclusive" learning environments and expand access to computer science education. The left-wing education establishment has spent the last decade telling parents that DEI programming makes schools safer and more welcoming. The argument is that "inclusive" environments protect vulnerable kids. Tran's classroom was so inclusive it won a national award. The question parents in Lynn are asking isn't whether diversity training works. It's whether anyone was paying attention to what was actually happening in that classroom while the adults were busy writing nomination letters.
This is a clear example of the gap between institutional virtue signaling and institutional accountability. Celebrate the right language, check the right boxes, hand out the check, and never look too closely at what happens after the cameras leave.
