Who would have thought that cutting off police funding in your city would lead to trouble?
Well, in Austin, Texas, locals have learned that lesson the hard way. Since the Austin City Council decided to defund the police department in 2020, the city has struggled with a scarcity of police officers and increased 911 emergency response times.
Due to the shortages last week, there were several hours when no police officers were present in any part of the city.
Austin Police Assc. President Michael Bullock said to Fox News Digital, “We are currently facing a free-falling personnel issue as a result of previous councils and leadership intentionally working against our officers and department.” We have now had our contract voted down twice or allowed to expire. Since 2017, we have lost more cops than we have hired every year. To attempt to react to 911 calls, we had to disband our specialist groups and make detectives work backfill on patrol.”
“The dept. was on the verge of a total staff collapse last year after 40 police officers filed retirement papers in response to a 9–2 city council vote to pursue a one-year contract that the police union’s board had rejected in favor of a four-year contract that the city had previously agreed to in principle.”
As a result, Bullock went on, “We’ve faced a population boom of over 250,000 more inhabitants at the same time that our personnel have been pushed back at least 15 years.” Add to it a D.A. who has made it very evident that his top priorities are releasing criminals and attacking cops rather than maintaining public safety.”
“After the BLM riots in 2020, Austin’s city council unanimously decided to reallocate up to $150 million, or roughly 34% of the department’s current budget, from the police department’s budget and put the money toward other services. The Texas Legislature approved a measure the next year that effectively forced Austin to reinstate the funds, but the police shortfall still exists.”
Austin resident Lauren Klinefelter told the newspaper that after calling 911, individuals can no longer rely on timely aid. After her young children were involved in an automobile accident in 2022, Klinefelter was unable to seek assistance.
“Not only was my car ruined, but my kids were bleeding and had visible injuries, so we needed an ambulance and some emergency help,” she said. “I dialed 911, and to my amazement, it kept ringing and ringing, and then it connected me to a 311 operator for non-emergencies.”

She had no way of knowing when emergency services would arrive, so she had to take a Lyft to a neighboring hospital.
“We took a Lyft to the hospital and back home since we had no other choice because my kids were bleeding and more than an hour had gone,” the mother stated. “No one ever called me to follow up on the event, and the cops never showed up.”
Nick Kantor feels that if the police department hadn’t been cut off, his brother Doug would still be alive. Doug was killed in a high-profile mass shooting in Austin in June 2021.
A gunfight between two competing juvenile gangs on Sixth Street resulted in Doug’s untimely death and the injuries of thirteen innocent bystanders. Concerns over the ethnicity of the people the Austin Police Department was targeting led to the defunding of the anti-gang task force and other crime control initiatives.
In the past, Joe Biden has openly stated his support for cutting the police budget. In 2020, when asked if he and activist Ady Barkan might agree that “we can shift some of the [police] funds,” Biden responded, “Yes, certainly.”
Since then, he has made an effort to separate from the movement.

Totally agree. The god fearing residents of Austin are in harms way. Their ‘kiddies’ and misinformed population now pay price for a few that seem to have a better mouse trap, but still need to provide plans for it. Whether one likes it or not, publish the names, address, phone numbers of the city counsel for all to see and put them in bulls eye of the malcontent. Maybe if they suffer the atrocities of no police, it may wake them up, but if they are so bent on kneeling to the Democratic Ring and kiss it, they are ones to be removed from office. Beware of who you vote for and never forget an elected official works for you, not themselves.

Take some of the bribery money from Joe that he received from China and use it to help fund and support the Police. Where Police shortages have occurred and in turn resulted in obvious higher crime rates, even if only in part as a result of his defund the police commentary, he should step up. The President should always show strong support to the men and women working to keep our citizens safe from the criminals that cause the ever increasing crimes in our country. It is long past time to do show our strong support and willingness to stand up for those that are willing to wear a badge and put their safety on the line every day.
