Leonardo DiCaprio, the actor, appeared in a federal court on Monday about the alleged participation of Malaysian financier Jho Low in a money-laundering plot. The plan entails channeling funds through a famous 90s rap artist to make contributions to former President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012.
“It was a casual conversation about which party he supported, and I told him which party I supported,” DiCaprio said. “And he informed me that he, or a group with him, was going to make a substantial donation to the Democratic Party.”
“It was a substantial sum… somewhere between $20 and $30 million.” I exclaimed, “Wow, this is a lot of money!” the actor claimed in court.
The New York Post reports:
“Low reportedly recruited Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, the original member in the iconic 1990s hip-hop ensemble The Fugees, to funnel the funds to Obama’s reelection campaign because foreigners are prohibited from donating to US campaigns according to federal election law.”
“Prosecutors claimed that Michel spent tens of millions of dollars lobbying the government on behalf of Mr. Low along with the Chinese government as a whole.”
“A large portion of the money was allegedly stolen. Low is suspected of stealing $4.5 billion from Malaysia’s state investment funds, 1MDB.”
DiCaprio, 48, was summoned as a witness because of his long-standing friendship with Low, whom he described as “a huge businessman” with ties in Abu Dhabi and Malaysia. Low contributed to the production of his 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” for which he received a Golden Globe for best actor.”DiCaprio once said he was part of a party that traveled with Low on his aircraft to Australia to enjoy New Year’s Eve before traveling to Las Vegas to celebrate the holiday for a second time within one day. Michel, whom he encountered backstage at a Fugees performance in the 1990s, he said, came on some of the trips.”
On several instances, DiCaprio and Obama have collaborated to raise consciousness about climate change and the significance of environmental conservation.
