California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is now open to the concept of paying reparations for slavery, despite previously stating his opposition to the proposal, which was proposed by his own task group on the subject.
According to Breitbart News:
“Following a legislative panel’s determination that the state was responsible for hundreds of billions of dollars, which he signed into law, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) withdrew his support for paying reparations to slave descendants this week.”
“In 2020, during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, Newsom signed a measure creating a task committee to look into reparations obligations for slavery in California, a free state since its founding in 1850.”
“The committee, which was mostly made up of black members, conducted hearings all around the state and came to the conclusion that California owed each black person $1.2 million even though it only allowed those who were descended from slaves to apply.”
According to Fox News Digital, Newsom was refusing to support the committee’s impending recommendations because dealing with the heritage of slavery “is about much more than cash payments.”
Now, however, Newsom is turning around following an anticipated media uproar and criticism from the black activists whose expectations he had raised with the reparations task team. According to The Sacramento Bee:
“A Newsom representative provided The Bee with an email statement in which he corrected his remarks.”
“The articles produced by sites like Fox News and others use sensationalized framing, which is incorrect. The Governor is eager to see the whole report when it is ready, along with any recommendations.”
“Anthony York, Newsom’s main communication adviser, said that while Newsom is still in favor of cash payments, he wants to wait until the whole report is delivered to his desk before making any decisions.”
Other non-cash proposals made by the committee include overturning the will of the people and abolishing the legislation prohibiting the use of race-based policies, including affirmative action, in state activities in California.
How California would make monetary restitution payments is unclear. A $100 billion budget surplus that Newsom had last year has now turned into a $32 billion deficit this year, and cities such as San Francisco, which is also seeking reparations, are experiencing similar issues.
Oakland teachers just recently went on strike in protest at the district’s failure to compensate its minority pupils. At this point, the district has agreed to form a task group on restitution.

You are so correct! My family is Irish, and didn’t even immigrate to the United States until after slavery was abolished. Why should I – or anyone else who’s family had NOTHING to do with slavery (either as owners or slaves) have to be part of this boondoggle? This is just another Democrat vote buying ploy.

Did Newsome fall and hurt his head. Where is he going to get the money? One can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip. I have seen smarter 2×4’s.
Why he will raise taxes! That state is doing everything they can to disrupt the supply chain and run cost up! They don’t want independent trucker in the state and demanding that to operate in that state you must have newer trucks. Now in 15 years they want all electric trucks! They will haul less do to weight restriction on the roads in CA. and can not go as far as a diesel can today that has been proven with electric pick up truck put a load on them and mileage drops to 70 mile per charge!
we can’t take credit for abolishing slavery 200 years ago but we can be penalized for for slavery 200 years ago… the white population makes up 10% of the world’s population, it is improbable for them to do all the bad things they are accused of, and yet Newsom makes a panel of all black people to determine how much money each black person should get, now what possibly could go wrong with that.. on top of that who will over see the distribution of such reparations?? I thought California was a free state during the Civil War….If that is so why should Californians pay reparations to the black….Why should any free state that fought during the Civil War pay for reparations? The blacks should be paying reparations to the whites who fought for their freedom during the Civil War…

I saw many of them at a forum demanding the money or ‘no vote’ for Newsome…blackmail. so, now he may see the type of people he is dealing with (which has NOTHING to do with skin color).
Reparations were made by all the people who died while helping to free the slaves, including the soldiers who fought for their freedom!!! These people do not deserve reparations for something that happened to their ancestors!!! The only people who may have deserved reparations, are dead! And the reparations need to come from the people who captured their ancestors and sold them into slavery, which is still happening today, and it isn’t America!!!
