President Joe Biden admonished gas station owners to lower prices and to “do it soon” in a puzzling series of remarks this week, blaming the most recent gasoline price hike on greed. The president made his remarks when the national average cost for a gallon of gasoline is approximately $3.80, and millions of people are concerned about the rising expense of heating their homes.
The president is oblivious that government policies and regulations have made things worse in the face of widespread inflation, highly volatile energy markets, and global instability.
Even more evidence for this may be seen at the state level, where energy prices differ dramatically from one state to the next as a result of policy choices. The American Legislative Exchange Council’s latest Energy Affordability Report highlights the striking price disparity between gasoline and electricity (ALEC).
The Northeastern states are among those that suffer the most from poor government energy policies. Due to New York’s prohibition on pipelines from the gas-rich areas in Pennsylvania, several of these states were forced to rely on natural gas imports from Russia.
Energy prices are expected to soar in New England as a result of the substantial cutoff in imports from abroad brought on by Russia’s aggressiveness in Europe and the large price hikes brought on by the scarcity of supplies easily available on the international market.
It is no accident that the top 10 most costly states for electricity include Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, all of which have some variation of a cap-and-trade energy system, a sneaky way of taxing energy output and raising its cost.
Americans pay more for their energy when political interests-driven government mandates determine who will win and lose in specific energy markets. Top-down regulations like carbon fees and renewable portfolio standards severely distort the energy market at the expense of consumers.
Biden destroyed our energy production with nothing to replace it. It was a huge gift to Russia and China and devastated our economy. And now we have to worry about a nuclear war. Biden can’t do anything right!
