In light of current battery technology and challenges facing the state’s electrical infrastructure, the Head of theToyota Motor Corporation, Akio Toyota, told reporters on Thursday that California’s ban from selling new gas-powered cars in 2035 will be “tough” to implement.
According to Fox News, Toyota was responding to the new regulation put in place by California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) and the influential California Air Resources Board, which would nearly entirely mandate the use of electric vehicles in new automobile sales in just 12 years.
Fox News said
“The president of Toyota Motor Company stated this week that it will be “tough” to adhere to California’s proposal to ban gas-emitting automobiles and that the transition to battery-powered vehicles will end up taking longer than the “mainstream media” anticipates.”
Speaking about California’s new regulations, Akio Toyota, president of Toyota Motor Corporation, told reporters through an interpreter on Thursday that “actually speaking, it appears quite impossible to really achieve them.”
“Toyota listed several obstacles to EV adoption, such as effects on the electrical infrastructure and the lack of convenient access to electricity for approximately a billion people worldwide.”
Breitbart News has reported that just a few weeks after the state experienced rolling blackouts during a heat wave in 2020, Governor Newsom announced his prohibition on the sale of new gas-powered vehicles in 2035. And only days after CARB approved the new electric vehicle rule, the state last month recommended that owners of electric vehicles to not charge their cars in the the afternoon and nighttime hours owing to restrictions on electricity availability.
To transition California to an all-electric fleet, the state’s electricity grid would have to increase power output by around 30%, while also removing nuclear power and cutting fossil fuels to 10% of the energy mix.
With the introduction of the hybrid Prius to tremendous market success a decade and a half ago, Toyota was one of the innovators in “green” automobiles.
Toyota relocated tens of thousands of jobs from Torrance, California, to a centralized headquarters in Texas in 2014.
What happened to choice? I don’t want an ev, too expensive and too new an idea for all the bugs to be worked out, die engine fires etc. It isn’t right to force people to drive something they don’t want.
