Democratic Socialist Supervisor Dean Preston of San Francisco made a demand for legislation to restrict the use of firearms by security guards to defend property.
In a tweet, Preston said, “Today at the meeting of the board of supervisors I will be pushing for measures that would specifically forbid security guards from drawing their firearms in order to defend property.”
“The life of a person is more valuable than property,” he said. “We must amend municipal legislation to prohibit security guards from drawing their firearms just to defend property.”
Preston attempted to cite an April 27 occurrence during which a Walgreens guard reportedly fatally shot Banko Brown to support his argument against the usage of firearms by security guards.
According to KTVU, the security officer reportedly shot Brown, a suspected shoplifter, in late April. Brown was referred to by The Guardian as a “black trans organizer” who reportedly “tried to grab snacks out of the store.”
The guard was not originally charged by the San Francisco district attorney Brooke Jenkins because video of the event proved “the guard believed he faced mortal danger and reacted in self-defense.” Jenkins, however, said this week that she was “still contemplating charges in Brown’s killing.”
