While the US economy is in a slump during debt default discussions, President Joe Biden has booked a trip to Papua New Guinea for later in May to promote “inclusive economic growth”.
Papua New Guinea’s prime minister James Marape and President Joe Biden will meet to “discuss ways of strengthening cooperation on difficulties crucial to the region as well as the United States on topics like fighting climate change, safeguarding maritime resources, and expanding resilient and inclusive growth in the economy,” the White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this week, despite recent polls showing that Americans are having financial difficulties.
Biden’s overseas journey to promote “inclusive economic growth” comes at a time when 75% of Americans think that the economy in the United States is becoming worse. According to a CBS News/YouGov survey, the economy, which has been a major worry for months, is seen by 97% of Americans as being of the utmost importance.
The country is scheduled to start making payments on its debt after June 1. However, the crises could’ve been prevented. A measure to increase the debt limit and reduce excessive government spending was approved by the House of Representatives last month.
The White House has said it would not negotiate on increasing the debt ceiling, and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has been unwilling to allow a Senate vote on the measure.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to a question about whether Biden would cancel the overseas trip to address the debt limit problem by saying that “the president is capable of being a president anyplace… Congress is able to deal with this right now.”
Biden will have a “conversation” with Congress about the House Republican measure this week. She added of the conference, “The president hopes it’s a fruitful dialogue.”
She said, “The Republicans are shackling the whole Republican economy. We don’t intend to engage in a debate about what constitutes a fair deal.”
She said, “The president is not avoiding the issue. The four leaders will be here today at 4 o’clock for this discussion.”
