Why South-American Drug Lords Say They Love Democrats

23 Illegal immigrant drug traffickers from Honduras are thanking San Francisco, California, for adopting a sanctuary city policy that protects them from deportation when they are apprehended, telling local media that the legislation is one of the reasons they choose the Democratic-controlled city to sell their drugs to Americans.

A San Francisco Chronicle study examined copious police and ICE data and spoke with 25 drug traffickers from Honduras, many of whom are undocumented immigrants who earn up to $350,000 yearly from narcotics sales in the Bay Area.

While a number of the drug dealers stated to the Chronicle that they first came to San Francisco with the hope of finding legal employment, others said that their only goal when they arrived was to sell narcotics.

San Francisco’s strict sanctuary city policy, which gained international headlines after 32-year-old Kate Steinle was murdered in 2015 by a stray bullet fired by a seven-time convicted criminal and five-time deported illegal immigrant, is an allurement for the Hondurans involved in drug trade there.

The drug traffickers’ arrests on drug-related offenses do not result in their expulsion from the country. They are frequently let out of jail with no bail, and only a small percentage of them are rapidly found guilty.

One such drug dealer informed the Chronicle, “The reason is that it feels like you are here in Honduras when in San Francisco. The law is the problem because authorities do not deport people, San Francisco is sought after because it acts as a sanctuary city. You enter jail and leave.

The Chronicle noted that illegal immigrants from Honduras who were convicted of selling narcotics in San Francisco were frequently just returned to their home country before reentering the nation illegally to resume their drug peddling in the sanctuary city.

The Chronicle said that one drug dealer, in particular, has made his eighth trip back to San Francisco following his deportation to Honduras.

Drug traffickers in San Francisco are increasingly having a difficult time getting quick convictions. Only 6% of people accused of drug offenses from 2018 to 2022 have received a conviction. Seventy-five percent of individuals prosecuted last year have still not been found guilty, entered into a plea agreement, had their charges dismissed, or received an acquittal.

A dramatic increase in overdose deaths correlates with San Francisco’s emphasis on protecting most illegal aliens involved in the drug trade from deportation, which has led to widespread migration, particularly from Honduras.

Nearly 650 unintentional drug overdose deaths occurred in San Francisco in 2022, with fentanyl being blamed for more than 70% of them.

In contrast, there were about 350 overdose fatalities in the city in the first five months of this year, which represents an increase of more than 40% from the same time last year. Fentanyl is to blame for about eight out of 10 of those fatalities.
