This week, Fox News contributor Peter Doocy questioned the Biden administration’s assertion that illegal immigration had reduced by more than 90%.
What exactly is the claim?
President Joe Biden, according to the White House media secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, has dramatically reduced illegal immigration, by “more than 90%.”
She asserted that due to the president’s initiatives, illegal immigration had decreased by more than 90%.
So, what happened to Doocy?
The “more than 90%” assertion drew a lot of attention, but there was no follow-up at this week’s news conference. So, Doocy took it upon himself to inquire of Jean-Pierre where she got that figure.
“Where did this number arise from?” he inquired, adding that the Customs and Border Protection agency reports an increase in illegal migration over the previous year.
Jean-Pierre started talking over Doocy, then chastised him, adding, “If the dramatics would settle down a little bit.”
“What’s so dramatic regarding voicing a question about—” When Jean-Pierre disrupted him again, Doocy shot back.
“I was referring to the parolee program,” she explained. “As you are aware, the president established a parolee program to work with specific nations on ways to limit illegal migration. And the data shows that it has decreased by more than 90%. That’s who I was talking to.”
When Doocy tried to respond, Jean-Pierre declined to let him and moved on to another reporter.
According to Fox News contributor Bill Melugin, immigration levels from nations participating in the parolee program got better but that improvement was canceled out by increased migration from nations not participating in the program.
“Earlier this year, encounters with Venezuelans, Cubans, and Nicaraguans, dropped by 90% after a policy shift, but other nations, such as China, increased by over 800%. Illegal crossings, notably Venezuelans, have returned to peak levels,” Melugin added.
Indeed, when Biden implemented the parolee plan roughly four months back, Melugin predicted that the program would be used to control the visual perception of the crisis at the border while exacerbating it.
“This new approach will almost definitely lower *recorded* monthly illegal crossing figures because those with these nationalities are crossing in enormous numbers,” he said in January. “However, migrants who are not eligible for parole are going to have no motivation to surrender now and will flee as ‘gotaways.'”
Indeed, the Border Patrol announced on the very same day that Jean-Pierre claimed immigration had gotten better that over 22,000 migrants had already been apprehended in the past 72 hours.
