U.S. Government Angered By New Russia & North Korea Agreement

The Biden administration recently issued a warning over “actively advancing” arms negotiations that exist between Russia and North Korea following the fact that Sergei Shoigu, the defense minister of Russia, visited Pyongyang to discuss enhancing military connections between the two nuclear-armed nations. The talks between North Korea and Russia have hit a new level, according to a US intelligence report that National Security Council spokesman John Kirby released on August 30, 2023.

After the meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un wrote each other letters “promising that they would work together more,” Kirby said. He also said that a different group of Russian officials had gone to Pyongyang to talk more about an arms deal. Kirby said that Russia is trying to get more ammo to stop a Ukrainian counteroffensive. So far, the much-talked-about counter-offensive hasn’t done much of anything.

Additionally, he mentioned that Russia is seeking additional raw resources for its weapons industry.

Kirby said, “What we are witnessing in this counteroffensive is an actual gunfight, and the two sides are firing artillery, so we are aware that artillery represents one of Russia’s requests.” The spokeswoman for national security also said that Russia is looking for other weapons.

This latest warning came after the US government earlier claimed that North Korea had provided infantry missiles and rockets to Russia in 2022 for use by the private military business Wagner Group. The US also said that Russia and North Korea are talking about an agreement that could entail Russia sending food along with additional goods to North Korea in return for weapons.

Since February 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, North Korea has tried to get closer to Russia. Russia is sending more grain to North Korea in 2023 because there are rumors that there might not be enough food after the North Korean government shut down the country because of the Wuhan virus plague.

As a reaction to the rising military links between Russia and North Korea, the US has put bans and export controls on people and organizations that are involved in trading arms between the two countries. Kirby said, “The main goal of export controls and the sanctions is to try to take away Russia’s ability to get these kinds of raw materials as well as basic ingredients that they need to make weapons.” He went on to say, “We ask North Korea to stop talking about arms with Russia and to keep the promises it has pledged publicly not to give or sell weapons to Russia.”

Russia and North Korea’s friendship will only get better because they both dislike the US. The US has put sanctions on both countries and tried to change the governments of both. In this new age of multipolarity, this is simply one of many partnerships that will get stronger.
