According to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, a former Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania was given a 30-month jail term after engaging in fraud that benefited Democratic politicians.
According to the office, Michael “Ozzie” Myers, 79, entered a guilty plea to charges including conspiring to falsify voting records, obstruction of justice, bribery, and plotting ballot-stuffing schemes in Pennsylvania’s 2014 through 2018 elections. He also admitted to conspiring to vote illegally in a federal election and violate civil rights. He served in the U.S. House from 1976 -1980 prior to being ousted for bribery and sentenced to three years in jail after the FBI discovered him.
In the more recent case, Myers was also given three years of supervised probation and fined $100,000.
A 2020 indictment claims that Myers paid Domenick J. Demuro, the election judge in Philadelphia at the time, to rig votes in favor of particular candidates. Demuro entered a guilty plea that year.
According to the Washington Examiner, Myer also confessed to conspiring to commit election fraud with Marie Beren, a former Philly electoral judge that pled guilty in Oct. 2021.
“Protecting election integrity is essential to maintaining public confidence in the electoral process,” according to FBI Philadelphia District Special Agent Director Jacqueline Maguire. “Ozzie Myers explicitly despised the law and the will of the people of Philadelphia by his behavior. He has now become a federal felon twice over and is now returning to prison, giving him time to reflect on the significant impact of fair and free elections.”
