Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, was accused of “dereliction of duty” by two Republican senators, who also said that his inactivity on border enforcement may be used as a pretext for impeachment.
On Wednesday, Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) wrote to Mayorkas in response to the nation’s southern border’s ongoing surge in migrant crossings.
The senators wrote: “Your refusal to faithfully execute this country’s immigration laws and willful ignorance of the very real humanitarian situation at our southern border amounts to a grave dereliction of duty and a breach of your oath of office.”
“Historically high levels of illegal immigration and drug trafficking show that every conceivable concern to public health and national security can enter our country through our southern border. You have failed to acquire any form of operational control over the southern border, despite the valiant efforts of the Border Patrol agents, who work without much assistance from Washington, D.C.,” they continued.
“We are extremely concerned about the implications of this failure for American citizens’ health and safety as well as for the country’s national security. These mistakes must be corrected, and you must take responsibility for your actions,” the letter stated. “The American people deserve better.”
The figures from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) paint a picture that contradicts the Biden administration’s assertions that the southern border is secure.
The fiscal year 2022 had 2,150,639 interactions with illegal aliens along the southern border, which is a record high for a calendar year. The number of contacts increased significantly from the fiscal year 2021, which saw 1,734,686 encounters, the second-highest number ever in a single year.
“You have allowed the crisis to fester and implemented policies that have significantly aggravated the issue while continuing to maintain that “the border is secure,” far from taking action to confront this disaster and protect the southern border. If urgent action is not taken to address this egregious duty neglect, there may be grounds for impeachment,” according to Cruz and Graham.
The senators mentioned considerable amounts of fentanyl that the CBP had captured in addition to an increase in migrant interactions.
12,861 pounds were among the totals that CBP detained in the fiscal year 2022, a 219% rise from the same point in the fiscal year 2020. Additionally, 2,287 pounds of fentanyl, enough to kill more than 500 million people, were found just last month.
He needs to be fired along with a lot of others contributing to not upholding their pledge to protect the American people.
