According to reports, Judge Naita Semaj of the NY Supreme Court’s 12th Judicial District in Bronx County is about to be relieved of her responsibility for managing criminal cases as a result of a judicial investigation into allegations of abusive behavior inside her courtroom and criticism for releasing a man accused of killing a 15-year-old boy from jail.
According to individuals who spoke to the New York Post, Semaj will transition from handling criminal cases to handling civil court proceedings sometime in the coming week. The judge, who was elected to a 14-year term in late 2021, was the subject of a judicial investigation for reportedly acting abusively in her courtroom.
She was also recently criticized for releasing Tyresse Minter, 28, without posting bond after he was charged with killing his 15-year-old stepson, Corde Scott, by strangling him.
The case received so much media attention that Governor Kathy Hochul (D) stepped in to secure Minter’s reincarceration prior to his trial. However, Bronx County Court Judge David Lewis mandated Minter’s release from custody this week.
According to Scott’s mother Karen Glenn, she is “pleased to hear that Judge Naita Semaj will no longer be hearing criminal cases,” according to the Post.
“I have faith in the legal system, and now the families and victims may be treated with respect, Glenn remarked. … This is not the first time she has done something awful, as was the case with my son.”
Semaj has developed a reputation for releasing without posting bond criminal defendants who have been charged with some of the most terrible offenses.
For instance, Semaj released and dismissed charges against local rapper and gang member Camrin Williams, 16, last year. Williams was accused of shooting 27-year-old NYPD Officer Kaseem Pennant in the leg when the officer was searching him.
Williams’ accusations were withdrawn by Semaj because she asserted that Pennant shouldn’t have searched the gang member in the first place.
According to Breitbart News, more than 72% of defendants in New York City with past violent criminal histories who were afterward released without bond were later arrested again for crimes.
