DEI is Dead – Trump Just Killed it in One Shot

Washington DC, USA - August 21 2019: a serious looking president Donald Trump walking across the lawn of the White House, waving his hand in greeting gesture

President Donald Trump wasted no time delivering on his campaign promises as he launched a sweeping effort to dismantle Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives across the federal government during his historic second term. By Wednesday evening, federal DEI officials found themselves placed on paid administrative leave, signaling the administration’s determination to eradicate policies tied to the previous Biden administration.

On his first day back in office, Trump rescinded an executive order signed by former President Joe Biden in 2021, titled “Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.” This move marked the beginning of what Trump has described as a mission to restore meritocracy and eliminate “wasteful” DEI practices.

By Monday afternoon, Trump had signed a second executive order, “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing,” followed by a third, “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” the next day. This series of orders set in motion the termination of DEI offices, programs, and performance requirements across the federal bureaucracy, its contractors, and grantees.

The second order mandated agencies to work with the Office of Management and Budget, the attorney general, and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to “terminate, to the maximum extent allowed by law,” all DEI-related offices, Chief Diversity Officer positions, equity action plans, and environmental justice initiatives. The administration also targeted the federal contractor affirmative action mandates established under Executive Order 11246, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965, which had long served as the foundation for racial quotas and preferences within federal contracting.

Heritage Foundation legal scholar GianCarlo Canaparo applauded the rescission of EO 11246, calling it “an essential move to eliminate entrenched, coercive race-based practices.” Canaparo noted that the order had enabled government agencies to pressure contractors into implementing de facto quotas disguised as affirmative action plans.

The most immediate shockwave came with a directive issued by the OPM, requiring agencies to notify DEI office employees by 5 p.m. Wednesday that they were being placed on paid administrative leave as the government begins shutting down DEI initiatives. The clarity of the administration’s stance left little room for ambiguity.

Unsurprisingly, some agencies have reportedly begun attempting to rebrand DEI programs under new names to sidestep compliance. However, the Trump administration has made clear that it will monitor such efforts closely. The protracted battle over DEI elimination, already backed by strong voter support, is far from over. Ending DEI ranked as the sixth-highest priority in a recent Fox News poll, trailing issues like inflation, tax cuts, and illegal immigration, but was still identified as the top priority for 29% of voters.

For President Trump, eliminating DEI programs is more than just fulfilling a campaign promise—it is a cornerstone of his broader agenda to restore what he describes as fairness, efficiency, and meritocracy in government. By taking immediate and decisive action, Trump has drawn a sharp line in the sand, setting the tone for a presidency focused on reversing what he has long criticized as the “radical left’s” policies.
