A far-left group that once claimed credit for driving former President Donald Trump out of the White House is now opposing President Joe Biden with a “Don’t Run Joe” initiative. According to the New York Post, the group intends to put pressure on Biden to drop his reelection bid in 2024.
RootsAction, a self-described “progressive” group devoted to “resisting the measures of the Republican right at every opportunity, while fighting the Democratic Party’s inclination to cede ground to Republican opposition in the guise of ‘bipartisanship,'” launched the campaign.
The organization said it “aided in Trump’s loss” by devoting “many months and significant resources toward its Vote Trump Out movement, with full-time organizers with in key swing states of Arizona, Michigan, and Wisconsin.”
RootsAction formerly backed independent Sen. Sanders’ presidential campaigns in 2016 and 2020.
According to a RootsAction press release, the group started an anti-Biden digital advertising campaign one day after the midterm elections, initially targeting Dems. in New Hampshire.
The group intends to persuade Democrats throughout the country to vote for a new presidential candidate in 2024, putting pressure on President Joe Biden to declare that he would not pursue a second term.
The Don’t Run Joe campaign stated, “It is apparent that Joe Biden should not serve as the party’s presidential contender in 2024.”
The campaign expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s “moderate” ideas, claiming that re-election would be “a disastrous mistake.”
The following statements appeared in this week’s digital ads for the Don’t Run Joe campaign: “We cannot afford to lose in 2024. We shouldn’t put our hopes in Joe Biden’s poor approval rating. This is not the time for flimsy measures! We need strong leadership to beat Republicans in 2024. #DontRunJoe. Allow the Democrats a fighting chance.”
“The danger of an extreme right wing Republican has become all too clear. The President’s bold and inspiring leadership will be critical” According to the campaign. “Unfortunately, President Biden hasn’t been courageous or inspiring.”
