Political demonstrations in the Islamic Republic of Iran are showing the rest of the world what true feminism really looks like.
For most of us in the Western world, that is countries accustomed to democracy and capitalism as societal constructs, feminism has come to carry a very different meaning than it did a century ago. Back then, feminism referred to a woman’s fight for political equality. Once these goals were achieved, however, the movement became hijacked by sinister political actors.
Today, so-called feminist marches in the United States, Canada, and Europe target a pay gap that doesn’t exist, and rail against man’s supposed inherent need to oppress everyone around.
In Iran, by contrast, women are openly rebelling against overt signs of religious oppression by removing their traditional garments.
Typically, one would think that the secular left would be all over this — seeing as the system in question is strictly religious and repressive. But alas — problems with the Islamic world apparently don’t count.
