One of the left’s favorite talking points to distract from the fact that the Ku Klux Klan was founded by Southern Democrats is this idea that the two parties suddenly switched positions entirely sometime during the 1960s.
This event, typically referred to as the “Southern Strategy” pursued by Barry Goldwater and other Republican presidential candidates, was far more complicated than the left likes to admit. But in the end, the Republican Party’s original intent hasn’t changed all that much since the end of the Civil War.
Since the days of Abraham Lincoln, the Republican Party has traditionally championed private enterprise, minimal governance, and self-reliance. This is entirely compatible with the party’s abolitionist roots.
To suggest that the GOP began as some sort of progressive force and was later co-opted by a racist puppet master is historically illiterate, and borderline conspiratorial.
