After images showing the faces of migrant children being pressed against a fence as they were separated from their parents went viral, calls have been made for the federal government to improve the way they treat families crossing the border.
Following this viral sensation has been a massive misinformation campaign. For one, media talking heads have been leaving out the fact that migrant families that arrive at a designated port of entry simply have to claim asylum to remain together. Of course, this is no guarantee they’ll be cleared for entry into the United States, but they won’t get arrested and the parents won’t be separated from their children.
They also conveniently leave out the fact that the Trump administration is merely enforcing a law passed in the 90s and enforced under Barack Obama.
However, this hasn’t stopped a number of Republican lawmakers from joining the cause. As of the time of writing, both House Speaker Paul Ryan and Texas Senator Ted Cruz have announced legislative efforts to prevent families from being separated — even after being reprimanded by ICE.
