Democrats Threaten To Unleash “Nuclear Option”

Two people are dead in Minneapolis. A federal agent is missing a finger. The streets are burning.

And Democrats have decided this is the perfect moment to defund the people trying to restore order.

The Threat

Senate Democrats are refusing to pass any spending bill that includes funding for the Department of Homeland Security. No negotiations. No compromise. Shut it all down unless ICE gets starved.

Chuck Schumer made it official: “Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included.”

Translation: Give us what we want or the government closes.

The deadline is January 30th. Polymarket puts the odds of another shutdown at 76%. And Democrats aren’t blinking.

The Quotes That Tell You Everything

Listen to how these senators describe federal law enforcement doing their jobs.

Ruben Gallego of Arizona: “I won’t vote to fund murder in the name of law enforcement.”

Murder. That’s what he calls Border Patrol agents defending themselves against a man with a gun who wanted to massacre cops.

Andy Kim of New Jersey: “I’m not voting to fund this lawless violence.”

Lawless violence. That’s what he calls enforcing immigration laws passed by Congress and signed by presidents.

Chris Murphy of Connecticut: “The Senate should not vote to keep funding this rampage. We are not powerless.”

Rampage. As if ICE agents are roving death squads instead of law enforcement officers doing the job Americans elected Trump to make them do.

This is the Democratic Party in 2026. Federal law enforcement is murder. Border security is violence. Deportations are a rampage.

The Setup

This didn’t happen in a vacuum.

Democrats have spent months demonizing ICE and Border Patrol. Tim Walz called them “Trump’s modern-day Gestapo.” Arizona AG Kris Mayes suggested they’re not “real law enforcement” and discussed Stand Your Ground laws in the same breath. Sanctuary cities have obstructed enforcement at every turn.

They created the conditions for confrontation. They told their supporters that federal agents are illegitimate. They compared immigration enforcement to Nazi Germany.

And when confrontations turned deadly — when the rhetoric they spread produced exactly the violence you’d expect — they blamed Trump.

Now they want to defund the agencies entirely.

It’s a perfect closed loop. Demonize. Obstruct. Provoke. Blame. Defund.

The Bodies

Let’s not forget who’s actually dead here.

Renee Good died on January 7th. Alex Pretti died Saturday. Both deaths occurred in the chaos Democrats helped create with their anti-ICE messaging.

Pretti approached federal agents with a 9mm handgun. According to DHS, he wanted to “massacre law enforcement.” The agents defended themselves. Democrats called it murder.

A federal agent had his finger bitten off by a rioter in the aftermath. Democrats are now threatening to defund his agency.

These are the people Schumer and Gallego and Murphy are protecting. Not the agents. Not the communities being overwhelmed by illegal immigration. The rioters. The agitators. The people attacking law enforcement.

The Math Problem

Republicans control the Senate 53-47. But they need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. That means they need seven Democrats to keep the government open.

Right now, they have zero.

Every Senate Democrat is falling in line behind Schumer. They’re unified in their determination to shut down the government rather than fund immigration enforcement.

Think about the priorities that reveals.

They’ll fund everything else. Defense. Education. Transportation. Health and Human Services. All of it can proceed. But the moment DHS funding is attached, they’d rather close the whole operation.

Protecting illegal aliens is more important to them than keeping the government running.

The Last Shutdown

The most recent government shutdown lasted 43 days — from October 1st to November 12th, 2025. The longest in American history.

Democrats caused it. Democrats prolonged it. And when it finally ended, they immediately started planning the next one.

Trump saw it coming. Days before Pretti’s shooting, he told Fox Business: “I think we’re going to probably end up in another Democrat shutdown. The shutdown cost us a lot, and I think they’ll probably do it again.”

He was right. Here we are.

What They Want

Strip away the rhetoric and the demands are simple.

Democrats want Trump to stop enforcing immigration laws. They want ICE defunded or neutered. They want the border open. They want the 20 million people who entered under Obama and Biden to stay permanently. They want “sanctuary” to mean immunity.

They can’t win this through elections. Trump won a mandate to enforce the law. Polls show Americans support deportations. The democratic process rejected open borders.

So they’re using the only leverage they have left: hostage-taking.

Fund our priorities or we’ll shut down the government. Stop enforcing laws or we’ll call you murderers. Surrender your mandate or we’ll make the country ungovernable.

“We Are Not Powerless”

Chris Murphy’s quote deserves special attention.

“We are not powerless.”

He’s right. They’re not. They have the power to shut down the government. They have the power to demonize law enforcement. They have the power to provide rhetorical cover for rioters and agitators.

They’re using all of it.

This isn’t governance. It’s sabotage. When you can’t win elections, you break the system. When you can’t change policy through democratic means, you hold essential services hostage.

Murphy isn’t describing civic engagement. He’s describing insurgency in suits.

The Bottom Line

Two Americans are dead. An agent is permanently maimed. Minneapolis is burning.

And the Democratic response is to defund the people trying to restore order.

They spent months calling ICE agents Nazis. They compared border enforcement to the Holocaust. They told their supporters that federal officers are illegitimate and that resisting them might be justified.

Then violence happened. People died. And Democrats decided the real problem is that ICE has too much funding.

“I won’t vote to fund murder,” Gallego said.

The only murder here is what Democrats are doing to this country’s ability to enforce its own laws.

Shutdown odds: 76%.

Democrat remorse: 0%.
