If you don’t recognize what’s happening in this photograph, you’ve probably never had the displeasure of shopping in a “big box” store in California or New York. Before you’re allowed to leave the store with the stuff that you just paid for, you get detained until you can provide documentation proving that you are innocent of shoplifting.
A store clerk also rifles through your cart to make sure you’re not trying to smuggle an extra bottle of shampoo past him. But voting? Nah! Just fill in a ballot, no ID necessary. Or better yet just hand your blank ballot to that person in the Black Lives Matter T-shirt over there – they’ll fill your ballot out for you!
People don’t believe us when we tell horror stories about the dystopian condition of California or New York these days, but this meme describes pretty much everywhere you go. In some parts of California, it’s even worse.
Have you ever been to a dollar store that has to employ not one, but TWO fully armed, gun-toting security guards in body armor? Welcome to Oakland! If you see armed guards in a public library, you must have crossed the bridge into San Francisco! (Like they’ve got gold coins stashed in the History section or something.)
But voting? Pshaw! No security measures necessary!
