On Monday, Elon Musk’s Twitter released another batch of internal discussions, revealing that a Chinese employee attempted to tell fellow Twitter employees that censoring is wrong. A coworker then interrupted the employee, retorting strangely, “censoring by a government is totally different than censorship of the govt.”
“Perhaps since I am from China, I thoroughly understand how censorship can harm public discourse,” a Chinese Twitter employee told colleagues amid an internal debate over whether or not to block then-President Donald Trump’s acct.
“I understand this anxiety,” a colleague Twitter employee said to their Chinese coworker, “but I also believe it’s vital to recognize that censorship by the government is really very different than censorship of the government.”
“The first amendment in the United States — and equivalent legislation in other nations with similar notions — exist explicitly to prevent the government from suppressing the people,” said a coworker.
Another Twitter employee then jumped in, insisting that Trump had “obviously sought to subvert our Democratic system of governance” and hence should be barred from the social media platform.
“We began labeling/restricting his tweets once they became a threat to our democracy and that seemed to be our redline; yesterday, he blatantly attempted to subvert our Democratic system of governance and showed no indications of regret,” the Twitter staffer bemoaned.
“I’m not sure what else would be a clear basis to suspend him (again, as an unstable ruler attempting to overthrow the world’s most powerful Democracy),” the employee continued.
These discoveries come from yet another long Twitter thread titled “Twitter Files,” which was revealed on Monday by former New York Times reporter Bari Weiss.
Musk summarized the Twitter Files dump: “Under pressure by hundreds of activist workers, Twitter deplatforms Trump, a sitting United States President, even though they themselves concede that he did not breach the rules.”
