Despite the magazine’s waning popularity in recent years, TIME still manages to land itself in the spotlight with its provocative covers. This time, however, they won unexpected praise from the very people they were intending to insult.
Featuring three “wrecking balls” with a caricature of Donald Trump’s face on them, TIME’s latest cover refers to the administration as the “wrecking crew”, which has allegedly been tasked with undermining everything that is the federal government establishment.
The subtitle for the cover reads: “how Trump’s cabinet is dismantling government as we know it.”
If you’re a Trump supporter or even a traditional conservative who has been displeased with how things run in Washington for years on end, chances are you’re missing the fact that this was supposed to be an insult. Even Donald Trump Jr. pointed this out on Twitter.
“Love that @time thinks this is a negative for @realDonaldTrump as opposed to EXACTLY what his voters wanted,” the president’s son tweeted. “Thanks for acknowledging! #maga”
Trump Jr. is exactly right. President Trump’s electoral victory last year was powered by populist sentiments, with voters making it clear they were sick and tired of the status quo. To prove it, they elected a billionaire businessman with absolutely no political experience to the country’s highest office.
Perhaps the progressive writers at TIME could learn a thing or two from this development?
