In a classic attempt at deflection, many left-wing social media pages and content creators have begun appropriating the criticisms against them to slam conservatives for their alleged hypocrisy. The image here is one of the more recent examples.
In the image, we see a man wearing a MAGA hat holding up a sign that reads “down with safe spaces” — while surrounded by a cohort of riot police. According to the cartoonist, the character in question is hypocritical for condemning “safe spaces” while nestled in one of his own.
Before we go into just how incorrect all of this is, let’s briefly discuss what “safe spaces” are.
Safe spaces became popularized on college campuses in the years leading up the 2016 presidential election in the United States. They are typically set up by a group of individuals who don’t want to conflict with others with dissenting opinions, and have been used to by minority students to “take a break” from being around too many white people on certain occasions.
You could almost compare it to…building a wall…
That’s not at all what’s on display here. Based on the depiction of the MAGA character, the individual is staging some sort of protest or political demonstration. Virtually all protests (which pull the required permits from whichever city or municipality they’re occupying) are afforded police protection — this has included anti-cop movements such as the Black Panthers and Black Lives Matter.
Suggesting any level of hypocrisy here on behalf of conservatives just shows a complete lack of self-reflection.
