Aside from filling most Americans with grief, the tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas has seemingly left us with more questions than answers.
With the motive behind the barbaric act still unknown, individuals in news broadcasts and on social media have been free to speculate — with some going so far as to label the event an act of terrorism.
In the interest of fairness, this is a distinct possibility. However, there seems to be a motive in and of itself in rushing to this label. By calling Stephen Paddock a terrorist, leftist social media pages appear to be stretching to draw some kind of equivalency between him and Islamic terrorists in an attempt to discredit right-wing talking points.
What this shared image and others fail to point out is that “terrorism” is not an emotional descriptive — it is a legal one. By definition, terrorism requires a political motive, which police say they have yet to uncover in the case of Stephen Paddock.
Law enforcement officials must be allowed to do their jobs and investigate further. Rushing to a label to promote a political stance is dishonest and unpatriotic.
