The Media’s Gross Double Standard on Data Mining

Back in 2008, the media couldn’t extol enough praise for what was rightly labelled the most efficient political campaign in American history. This sentiment was echoed again in 2012 when then-President Barack Obama sustained his social media mastery to win his re-election bid. Republican candidate Mitt Romney didn’t even come close in the online battle of ideas.

Now, Republicans and their conservative supporters have finally caught up on the social media game. President Donald Trump solidified his support base using many of the same methods Obama used to do the same, data mining being among them. Now, as it’s revealed just how extensive websites like Facebook are in mining and selling user data to third parties, the media has spun the story in the other direction.

The fact of the matter is that Trump and Obama campaigned in more or less the same way, at least as far as online marketing goes. That Facebook uses its user data as a commodity really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Nevertheless, the press once again shows us that it’s willing to take any angle to demonize Trump and Republicans until the end of time.
