Going into the midterm elections, most mainstream news outlets are still giving the edge to Democrats even as some of the party’s most prominent members drag their reputations through the mud. Even conservative pundits have conceded that the House of Representatives will probably flip. But, didn’t we make that same prediction not too long ago?
In 2016, Republicans were thought to be doomed. After the release of a certain Access Hollywood tape revealed Donald Trump to be just as crude as everyone already knew he was, the election was thought to be over. Outlets like the Huffington Post gave Hillary Clinton a 90 percent chance to win. She was clobbered in the Electoral College vote.
So, is 2018 going to be the same? It’s hard to say. Because they’re not in power, Democrats are certainly motivated to get to the polls. However, surveys have revealed that the Republican Party is still seen as the party of change, which suggests its supporters are equally motivated.
We’re only going to know for sure after November 6th. However, it’s worth remembering that pollsters have been wrong before — very wrong.
