Professor Cancels Exam, Sparks Outrage at University

When a professor decides to cancel a midterm and send students into the streets to protest President Trump, you know we’ve reached peak liberal hysteria. At the University of Chicago—once a bastion of rigorous academic thought—a statistics professor named Yali Amit chose political activism over academic integrity. This glaring incident is not merely about canceling a class assignment; it exposes the deep ideological rot infecting our nation’s colleges and universities.

Professor Amit informed students in his machine learning and large-scale data analysis class via email that their planned midterm would be cancelled and instead replaced with a take-home assignment. The reason? Amit urged his students to join a nationwide protest against what he labeled as President Trump’s “dangerous authoritarian administration.” Amit declared in his email, “Marching against this dangerous authoritarian administration is of utmost importance!”

It gets worse. Amit not only branded President Trump’s America First policies as “authoritarian,” but he doubled down on his radical ideology by accusing the administration of “kidnapping people off the street,” deporting students for protesting in favor of Palestinians, and imprisoning innocent individuals. These baseless and incendiary claims are not just irresponsible—they’re appallingly inappropriate coming from a professor, whose role should be to educate, not indoctrinate.

This disgraceful behavior was first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, highlighting Amit’s troubling history of anti-Israel positions. Indeed, Amit’s email made sure to specifically highlight the Palestinian issue, alleging persecution of pro-Palestinian students by Trump’s administration. Such reckless and inflammatory rhetoric not only harms the professor’s credibility but also deepens divisions on campus, placing ideological purity tests above honest debate and intellectual diversity.

The university’s response to this incident has been predictably weak and disappointing. When asked for comment, a University of Chicago spokesperson merely labeled Amit’s actions as “not appropriate,” offering no indication of any meaningful disciplinary action. It seems that even America’s most prestigious institutions are either unwilling or unable to confront this relentless left-wing politicization of education.

Thankfully, a brave student in Amit’s class spoke up, rightly calling out the professor’s behavior as inappropriate and presumptuous. The student remarked, “It is inappropriate for a professor to cancel an exam to encourage students to attend a political protest. Furthermore, the message indicates that this professor, like many others in academia, assumes that all students share his left-wing political beliefs.” This student is absolutely correct. Amit’s assumption that all his students share his political biases and priorities is not just arrogant—it is a profound betrayal of the trust placed by students and parents in the educational system.

This incident is just the latest symptom of a wider crisis in higher education. Under President Trump, we’ve seen courageous steps taken, including the withholding of federal funding from universities that allow anti-Israel protests to intimidate and silence Jewish students. The University of Chicago itself lost $6 million in federal funding due to its failure to adequately address anti-Semitic behavior on campus.

Yet, clearly, the battle to restore sanity and intellectual freedom on campuses is far from over. President Trump has made it clear time and again that education reform is a top America First priority, and incidents like this underline exactly why such reform is desperately needed. Our universities should be centers of learning and critical thinking—not ideological echo chambers or recruitment grounds for left-wing activists.

Professor Amit’s actions are a wake-up call for parents, students, and policymakers. Academia has long drifted from its core mission of education and enlightenment. If we are serious about preserving America’s future, safeguarding freedom of thought, and defeating radical indoctrination, then we must demand accountability from institutions like the University of Chicago and professors who misuse their authority to further their own agendas.

It’s past time to reclaim our universities from the radical left—and ensure that education, not indoctrination, rules the day.
