With the near-decade long experience of the Obama Administration just barely behind us, this recent quote by the former commander-in-chief probably doesn’t seem all that surprising. Yes, it was made in jest, but it did give us insight into how the once universally adored Democrat really sees himself.
Now, ask yourself — what is one of the left’s biggest complaints about President Donald Trump? It certainly isn’t his free trade policy. In fact, his tariffs on steel and aluminum actually enjoy moderate to full-on support from the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party. It isn’t even his tax cuts either — most of the Democratic base is actually benefitting massively from the tax law’s changes.
…it’s his personality — his reputation as a gilded billionaire playboy which goes as far back as the 1980s (one of the main reasons why character assassinations against him never seem to work).
And, if we’re being intellectually honest, this is a fair critique. Trump routinely speaks of himself in an arrogant manner. Even when he announced his candidacy from Trump Tower, the phrase “I’m really rich” made its rounds through the media almost instantly.
But…Obama wasn’t (and isn’t) terribly different. This is a man who will still take credit for taking down Osama bin Laden, even though that military accomplishment rests on the back of the untold blood and treasure spent on that same mission by the previous administration. Perhaps liberals need to look a bit more inward, but we know that isn’t going to happen.
