This is probably the most confusing development to emerge out the news cycle last week.
Former President George W. Bush, who has been politically silent since leaving office in 2008, gave a very well-received speech at the Spirit of Liberty event, earning the praise of the very same entities that were ready to throw him under a guillotine less than a decade ago.
The speech appeared to include coded critiques of President Donald Trump. Speaking for 16 minutes, the former president condemned the rise of nationalism, and suggested that racist sentiments are more visible now than they had been in the past. Truthfully, there wasn’t much “code” to any of it.
To be fair, Bush also appeared to take some swipes at the left when he dismayed calls for protectionism and a growing hostility to the free market. Nevertheless, the speech was adored by liberals, many of whom suggested that Bush’s critiques were proof that Trump is represents the lowest point we could possibly go.
Before we give them this, let’s take a very brief trip down memory lane – Trump is hardly the first president in recent years to be called a fascist. Liberal commentator and former MSNBC talk show host Keith Olbermann did this almost nightly during Bush’s tenure.
We can virtually guarantee that if President Bush was still in office today, the media’s attitude wouldn’t be too different.
