First Lady Jill Biden hailed the contentious opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics as “amazing,” following criticism that it offended Christians by featuring a drag queen portrayal of Jesus’ Last Supper.
Biden, who led the American team to the Olympics this year, said that Los Angeles’s 2028 opening ceremony in Paris won’t be easy to beat.
NBC Los Angeles reports that the first lady remarked, “So, last night, it was really fantastic,” at a commemorative breakfast. “Our spirits were unaffected by the rain… I was saying to myself, “Oh my god, oh my god,” at every turn. How will we surpass this?
As drag queens and other costumed performers danced and athletes from several nations paddled down the Seine, rain fell throughout the celebration, drawing criticism from people who felt it did not accurately represent French culture.
Okay, so. While Paris boasts the Eiffel Tower, we have Hollywood and its legendary ability to fulfill every wish. I believe everything will work out. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) was also present at the breakfast, where Biden stated, “It’s a city where fresh generations of visionaries define our culture.”
“Olympians and fans will see themselves mirrored in Los Angeles at the end of the 2028 Games,” the first lady continued.
During the inaugural event, men wearing makeup and wigs depicted Jesus’s followers, while Barbara Butch, a self-described “love activist,” tried to play Christ in a recreation of Leonardo DaVinci’s well-known The Last Supper.
British TV personality Piers Morgan referred to the exhibit as “appalling” and a “mockery” of Christianity.
Journalist Kyle Becker stated, “The Olympics have made it apparent that Christian viewers aren’t welcome.”
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also criticized the ceremony, calling it a “very terrible opening” to the Olympic Games.
