Healthcare Choices Make the System Better, Not Worse

Nothing sells the idea of a single-payer healthcare system better than blatant lies about what it would look like.

In this image, we see Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders offering the viewer a fresh-looking apple, while Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell instead offers a “choice” of rotten apples. The implication here is that this choice — that is, a free market competition within the healthcare industry — degrades the product.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

If anything, healthcare quality in the United States has been the envy of the world for quite some time precisely because the country uses this capitalist approach. While individuals in countries with socialized medicine technically have more “access” to care, the products they are taking advantage of are often created right here in America.

The use of an apple to demonstrate this is oddly fitting, because healthcare services in countries with a single-payer approach often find themselves waiting longer to receive said services. Perhaps the images should be flipped around?
