Have Republicans Switched on Russia and Football?

There’s so much absurdity to this meme that it’s hard to unpack in one attempt.

Obviously, this image suggests that the Republican Party has switched its stance on Russia and football — assuming the latter was ever a serious part of their platform.

Sure enough, the typical image of a football fan is usually a right-of-center, middle-aged male. Therefore, most of the images mocking the opposition to the national anthem protests taking place during NFL football games usually include this caricature.

As for Russia, there has been no notable detraction on the part of the GOP apart from President Trump going on the record stating that it would be better to work with Moscow to achieve shared objectives in the Middle East rather than against them. Considering that the Obama administration essentially allowed the Kremlin to take major steps in securing Russia’s regional hegemony over the past decade, this is actually an incredibly moderate stance.

But let’s go back to football for a second, seeing as how Trump’s recent statement on the matter has seemingly lit a fuse all around the country. The NFL is not the only arbiter of the sport — college games still perform pretty well in the ratings, especially in the American South where they are more popular. To call Republicans “anti-football” over this issue is a misnomer at best.

Of course, Republicans are not alone in vocalizing opposition to the ‘Take The Knee’ movement. Since last year, ratings for the NFL have taken a considerable hit — pretty spectacular considering sports as an institution is one of the only things keeping cable alive in the 21st century.
