FBI Director Chris Wray told Americans to be “vigilant” this week, as the number of reports to the bureau rose after Hamas said it would hold a “Day of Jihad.”
At a speech this week in San Diego, California, at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference, Wray took a moment to express his “heartfelt condolences to the people of Israel and also share the anger that I know all of us feel because of the unbelievable brutality as well as the disregard for the lives of innocent people there,” according to Fox News.
After Hamas’s attack on October 7 that killed more than 1,300 Israelis, tensions between Israel and the Palestinians continue to rise. Wray stressed the FBI’s dedication to ending terrorism:
“Antisemitism and other violent extremism have been a part of history for too long. Attacking a population simply because of their faith is wrong, whether it comes from foreign terrorist groups or people who are inspired by them, or from violent extremists in the United States who are driven by racism. There is no change in our plans to keep fighting these threats, both in the US and abroad.”
In addition to killing people, Hamas, an Islamist terrorist group that rules over Palestinian land in the Gaza Strip, hurt about 3,000 people and took over 100 hostages. A UNICEF spokeswoman told CNN that soon after, Israel began a huge counterattack into Gaza, killing at the very least 2,215 Palestinians, which included over 700 children.
Wray asked people to be alert to protect “our neighborhoods” from the rise in reports of deadly threats:
“There’s no doubt that there are more reported threats in this tense situation. We need to be attentive and on the lookout, particularly for lone actors who might be motivated by recent events to carry out their own acts of violence. I also want you to stay alert, because as the main line of security in our neighborhoods, you’re often the first to notice when someone is getting ready to do something violent. And I’d also like you to keep sharing any information or evidence you may have.”
The FBI chief also said, “We’re going to do the same thing, so that together we can protect our communities.”
A day before Wray’s speech, many U.S. towns, including New York, were put on high watch because of fears of protests linked to the conflict. The Middle East Media Research Institute said that a Hamas leader called for followers all over the world to “mobilize in solidarity” on Friday, October 13.
