The FBI and Chicago police are looking into reports that several women infiltrated a hotel and spread bugs and maggots in a dining hall that was supposed to serve breakfast to delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
Employees of the Fairmont Hotel, which is housing delegates from Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri, and South Dakota, stated that the event occurred Wednesday at around 6:45 a.m.
Fairmont Chicago hotel spokesperson Haley Robles told WGN Investigates that a group of people disrupted a breakfast event connected to a DNC-related gathering at our hotel this morning. “Our crew moved right once to cleanse the area so that the event may go on free from other mishaps.”
Authorities claimed the demonstrators seemed to have brought the insects into the meal on purpose, maybe to convey a message to the delegates.
“Multiple unknown female offenders are reported to have entered a facility… and begun throwing unknown things onto tables carrying food,” a convention information center spokesman said in a statement. “It is thought that the culprits have then fled the vicinity. One person was treated and let go on scene. FBI-Chicago is helping along with CPD in the investigation.”
Not one party has assumed responsibility for the contamination of the breakfast buffet. But in July, a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators staged a similar action, unleashing a swarm of maggots in the dining hall of the Watergate Hotel, where Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu was lodging.
“All Americans have the right to peaceful protest; nevertheless, vile actions like these have no place in our democracy,” Indiana Dem Party spokesperson Sam Barloga stated. “We appreciate the quick response of the security staff.”
Numerous security concerns, including multiple bomb scares, have been directed against the Democrats.
Deputy Secret Service special agent in charge Derek Mayer stated during a Wednesday morning briefing, “We ran out every threat yesterday, and they are still coming in today.”
