On a conference call, Sunday regarding the failure of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) questioned executives from the Treasury Department, Federal Reserve, and the FDIC about digital censorship of “social media”.
Kelly’s identity was confirmed by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who was one of the 200 people in the Zoom conversation. “Just came off of a Zoom meeting with Fed, FDIC, Treasury, House, and Senate,” he posted following the conference call. “A Dem. Senator essentially asked if there was a program in place that would censor the information on social media that might lead to a run on the banks.”
Kelly reportedly advocated for the government to “engage with social media firms in order to restrict data that might lead to a run on banks,” according to Massie.
Without revealing Kelly’s identity, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) also mentioned Kelly’s query concerning the use of internet censorship as a means of governmental control.
“One attendee questioned whether Facebook and Twitter were being used to monitor false information and “bad actors” during a meeting with Biden’s under secretary of the Treasury, Nellie Liang. And this administration AGAIN has committed the federal government to interfere with freedom of speech. Unacceptable!”
According to Massie, Kelly framed his request for online censorship as a measure to curb the communications of foreign players. “I think [Kelly] framed it in a worry that foreign actors would be carrying out this,” said Massie. “Yet he made no suggestions that the filtering should be restricted to foreigners or to false information. The representatives from the three agencies were unable to respond to him and merely ignored the inquiry.”
“Kelly’s request for censorship was placed in context by the media, who noted that it came at a time of escalating calls from Democrats for more restriction by social media corporations.” It stressed the general Democratic opposition to the First Amendment and the importance of free speech and expression in general as it came to a close. The question was, “Why is that? Why do Democrats seem to be at odds with the First Amendment right now? What precisely is happening?”
