Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said she would support a big change in the rules for Congress. And now, two moderate Democratic senators are calling her out for saying this.
It would only take a simple majority of the upper house of Congress to pass a national right to abortion, according to Harris. However, even some liberals spoke out against this idea.
“That could really hurt our country,” he said. “It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia said that because of the policy, he would not back Harris.
“She’s a bad person. The idea of a filibuster is very important to her. That’s the only thing that makes us work and talk together. If she gets rid of that, this would be like the House on steroids,” he told CNN.
He also said, “I think that can basically destroy our nation, and my nation is more important to me than any one person or their ideas. That’s the worst thing ever.”
Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who used to be a Democrat but is now an independent, also said bad things about Harris.
“Removing the filibuster to make Roe v. Wade official also makes it possible for a future Congress to ban all abortions across the country. What a bad, short-sighted idea,” she wrote on social media.
Many Democrats were very angry at both Manchin and Sinema for going against their party’s line in order to keep the U.S. Senate nonpartisan.
Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton slammed Harris for changing her mind about the filibuster.
“Here’s the letter Kamala signed as a senator promising to support the filibuster to make sure the Senate ‘continues to serve as the world’s best debating body,'” he wrote on social media.
“Her words don’t mean anything,” Cotton said. “She’ll say anything to get elected.”
