After months of federal expenditure that added billions of dollars to the state’s budget surplus, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has requested that the Biden administration make federal assistance for flood recovery available to California.
In a statement released on Sunday, Newsom said that the persistent downpour that has dumped significant rains throughout his drought-stricken state had prompted him to ask for a federal emergency announcement, which would make federal assistance accessible.
According to Newsom’s letter to the president, “I am requesting Direct Government Assistance to satisfy vital emergency protection requirements that consist of mass care assistance, personnel, mass shelter support, mass evacuation support, supplies, and equipment.”
Governors frequently request federal assistance in times of need. However, California’s budget surplus was anything but typical; according to Breitbart News, it reached approximately $100 billion and was helped in part by the $26 billion provided by the federal government, which was reportedly required to keep the state afloat during the coronavirus epidemic.
However, the Golden State anticipates incurring a $25 billion deficit in 2022–2023 as a result of extravagant spending and decreased earnings brought on by a slowdown in the economy.
If California had handled its resources more prudently, the gap would have been filled by the additional federal funding that the state had previously received from Biden. Ironically, California does have a “rainy day” fund that Jerry Brown, Newsom’s predecessor, started when the economy recovered from the 2007–2008 recession.
