It’s tweets like this that remind us exactly why independent YouTubers have actually taken the time to make “thug life compilations” dedicated to Daily Wire founder Ben Shapiro.
Shapiro’s jab targeted women’s lifestyle magazine Cosmopolitan, a publication which tries to market itself as a feminist paradise and a sex catalogue at the same time. The takedown occurred after the magazine shared an article which claims that young children are in danger of spreading the evils of white racism through innocent Halloween costumes.
The article in question touches on a subject you’ve probably seen a few times this month: that cultural attire such as Native American headdresses or other traditional garb can be socially harmful if worn by someone with the wrong skin color.
As Shapiro points out, lamenting about colorful costumes while encouraging absurd practices such as “gender-neutral parenting” or even abortion is pretty off-base.
Halloween costumes celebrating cultures belonging to someone other than the person wearing it have become a hot topic in liberal bastions such as college campuses in recent years. Cultural appropriation, as they call it, is threat to the cultural identity of historically mistreated minority groups.
This logic couldn’t be more flawed. Cultural appropriation, the very trend which brought us rock n’ roll and just about every sport under the sun, is good for humanity as a whole. It encourages the communication of ideas between groups, ultimately bridging cultural divides.
