Anti-Gun Protesters Exhibit Massive “First World Privilege”

We’ve dug into the irony of today’s youth being the first generation in history to demand less rights from their government before, but this tweet by Allie Beth Stuckey really hits the nail on the head.

“First world privilege,” as Stuckey referred to it in this tweet, was on full display during the March for Our Lives demonstration. While protest movements in the past are famous for demanding respect for civil rights, an end to wars that didn’t make sense, and (going even further back) an end to taxation without representation, the student-led demonstration we saw in March showcased a full about-face.

Rights, as conservatives and classical liberals understand them, are not bestowed to the masses by an elite class. Rather, they are a natural state of being individuals are born with, and governments are in turn delegated certain powers to ensure those rights are protected. This is the opposite of what we saw with March for Our Lives.

This is much bigger than the gun control debate. If government is given additional authority in regulating which weapons we can buy and what we can do with them, we are effectively sacrificing our right to self defense.

The Second Amendment is more than a charter on self-preservation — it is the very teeth of the Constitution. It was an admission by the Founders that even the republican government they built may one day transform itself into the very thing they bound together to destroy, and may require a future generation to hold accountable — by force if necessary.
