Ever since the Trump administration announced it intends to reform immigration policy to give English speakers preferential treatment, the media has been flooding the national conversation with complete non-arguments regarding the proposal.
This meme serves as a prime example. In an attempt to underscore some level of hypocrisy or historical ignorance, the image notes that Donald Trump, Kellyanne Conway, and Stephen Miller all had foreign-born ancestors who didn’t speak English when they arrived in America.
There’s just one problem: Trump’s RAISE Act doesn’t barre individuals who don’t speak America’s de facto language from entering the country. It simply makes it easier for those who do.
The goal here is to stop the spread of chain migration — that is, the practice of letting virtually entire communities into the country that may or may not be culturally compatible with the native population.
Liberals should do a bit more homework before blasting legislation they clearly don’t understand.
